Gawsworth Community Shop

In 2010, Gawsworth General Stores was about to be converted into a flat. The community was so concerned about losing the last of its four shops that residents got together to raise the money to purchase and refurbish the shop and establish it as a community run facility.

Inside the shop you can find:

  • Deli counter for pies and cakes
  • Newspapers and magazines
  • Greeting cards and stamps
  • Sandwiches made-to-order
  • Tea and coffee to go
  • Dairy products
  • Pet foods
  • Beers, wines and spirits
  • Cigarettes and lighters
  • Grocery and household items
  • Fresh bacon, sausages and black pudding
  • Frozen meals and vegetables
  • Lollies and ice-cream

When the adjacent flat came on the market in 2018 the shop’s Board of Directors seized the opportunity to use the reserves it had accumulated from 7 years of successful trading to purchase it and, with the help of a grant from the Reaching Communities Big Lottery Fund, to convert it into a Community Hub to provide a wide range of additional facilities for the benefit of all in the community. Usage made of the hub to date includes:
