Children planting a tree in the community orchard

Community plants up orchard

Gawsworth now has its own community orchard thanks to the efforts of local families on 27th February.

15 trees have been planted in Gawsworth Park as part of the Parish Council’s 10-year park management plan. 11 apple trees, 2 pear, a cherry and a greengage were each planted by a different Gawsworth family after the planting was advertised via the Gawsworth Life Facebook Page.

The trees were funded through a grant from the Branching Out scheme operated by the Tree Council.
Community involvement will continue to be key to this project, from annual pruning to maybe pressing our own apples in a few years’ time. Community Orchards have been a great success in other villages and it’s wonderful to now have our very own.

Later this year the Parish Council will be adding a further dessert apple called Jester which seems particularly appropriate for Gawsworth.
