Gawsworth Lacrosse Victory
It’s an extraordinary achievement for Gawsworth Primary School, as they have become the National Lacrosse Champions for the third year in a row!
This success is a testament to the incredible team, their dedicated coaches, and the ever-supportive school community.
The tournament, held in Stoke-on-Trent, began with a buzz of excitement and anticipation. With teams travelling from all over the UK the atmosphere in the stands was electric. The proud parents, families, and staff cheered the team on with such enthusiasm they told off for being too supportive—surely a badge of honour!.
Led by their inspirational captain, Halle, who deserves a special mention for playing through the pain after tearing her hamstring earlier in the week, the team showed exceptional skill, pace, and sportsmanship from the very first whistle. Their determination and passion were clear, unsettling opponents and thrilling supporters.
The road to victory wasn’t all smooth sailing. After confident wins against Poverest and Bridge Water, Gawsworth faced two intense and closely fought matches against Killearn and Springfield. The quarter-final against Springfield saw the team pushed into a nerve wracking two minutes of extra time—where they showed incredible resilience, scoring four goals to secure a spot in the semi-finals.
With renewed energy and belief, the team powered through their semi-final against Boden Prep before facing Killearn once again in the final. Emotions were high, nerves were kicking in, but the Gawsworth squad rose to the occasion and delivered a dominant 8-3 victory to seal the title.
The final scores across the matches were:
Gawsworth 10, Poverest 3
Gawsworth 6, Bridge Water 1
Gawsworth 6, Killearn 5
Quarter Final
Gawsworth 8, Springfield 8, with Gawsworth winning 4-0 in extra time.
Semi Final
Gawsworth 7, Boden Prep 4.
Final
Gawsworth 8, Killearn 3.
Head of Gawsworth School Lisa Wainwright said, “None of this would have been possible without the incredible leadership and coaching of Mrs. Fregapane, ably supported by Ben—and a big shout-out to Jimmy, who worked with the team during the first half of the year and couldn’t be with them on the day.
To achieve this level of success once is something special. To do it three years in a row is a testament to the dedication, talent, and spirit of everyone involved.”
